Kalinga Literary Festival (KLF) Kathmandu will be held on September 13 & 14 2025 at Kathmandu.

Central theme of the festival:
Beyond Borders: South Asian Literature in a Changing World
South Asia is a region of profound literary richness, deeply rooted in centuries of storytelling, oral traditions, and written texts that have shaped the global literary landscape. From the epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana to the contemporary narratives of diasporic authors, South Asian literature has consistently redefined itself in response to socio-political transformations.

In the 21st century, South Asian voices have emerged as powerful agents of change, addressing crucial issues that transcend national boundaries. The theme for Kathmandu Kalinga Literary Festival 2025, Beyond Borders: South Asian Literature in a Changing World, seeks to explore how writers, poets, and intellectuals from the region are contributing to global conversations on identity, social engagement, climate action, economic development, cultural evolution, inclusion, and spirituality.

Key Themes of the Festival

Identity and Diaspora: Navigating the Self in a Globalized World
In an era of migration and transnational experiences, South Asian literature provides a crucial lens into identity formation. Whether through themes of exile, nostalgia, or hybrid cultures, writers articulate the complexities of belonging and the negotiation of multiple identities across geographies.

Literature as a Catalyst for Social Engagement
South Asian literary traditions have historically been at the forefront of social change. From Rabindranath Tagore to Arundhati Roy, writers have used literature to critique oppression, advocate for marginalized communities, and reimagine equitable societies. This theme will highlight how literature remains a medium for activism, resistance, and reform in contemporary times.

Climate Action and Environmental Narratives
With South Asia being one of the most climate-vulnerable regions in the world, literature has become a crucial tool in fostering environmental consciousness. Writers are weaving ecological concerns into their storytelling, addressing sustainability, displacement due to environmental disasters, and the philosophy of co-existence with nature.

Economic Development and Literary Representation
Economic upheavals, labor migrations, and social mobility have deeply influenced the narratives emerging from South Asia. This segment will explore how literature reflects and critiques economic transformations, the aspirations of new generations, and the consequences of economic disparity.

Cultural Evolution and the Reimagining of Traditions
South Asia’s literary landscape is witnessing a resurgence of interest in folklore, mythology, and historical fiction. Writers are engaging with ancient texts and oral traditions while reinterpreting them in contemporary contexts. How is literature bridging the past and present? What role does technology play in preserving cultural narratives?

Inclusion, Diversity, and the Power of Representation
Literature has the power to dismantle stereotypes and provide a voice to the underrepresented. Whether it is gender inclusivity, LGBTQ+ narratives, or the representation of indigenous communities, South Asian writers are shaping discourses on equality and justice. This segment will explore literature’s role in advocating for a more inclusive society.

Spirituality and Literature: Seeking Meaning in a Chaotic World
From the philosophical verses of Rumi and Kabir to contemporary spiritual narratives, South Asian literature has been deeply intertwined with the quest for meaning and inner peace. In an age of uncertainty and rapid change, how does literature provide solace, introspection, and wisdom?

Format and Engagements
Kathmandu KLF 2025 will bring together established authors, emerging voices, academics, and literary enthusiasts from across South Asia and beyond. The festival will include:

Panel Discussions & Keynote Talks – Featuring prominent thinkers, writers, and commentators discussing the core themes.

Poetry Readings & Performances – Showcasing the power of verse in shaping consciousness.
