Subroto Bagchi is Chairman of Odisha Skill Development Authority. This is a full-time assignment, in the rank of a Cabinet Minister. He was invited by Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha in 2016, to set up the Odisha Skill Development Authority to harmonise the various skill initiatives of the Government. Upon taking charge, the State has a new sense of direction, instilled urgency and above all, skill development has become aspirational in the eyes of everyone. In addition to leading the Skill Development initiatives of the Government of Odisha, Subroto Bagchi has generously given his time and energy towards entrepreneurship development, attracting industrial investment into the State, leadership development in the Government, and innovation in various spheres. In March 2019, he was appointed as the Chief Spokesperson of Government of Odisha in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. His primary role was to sensitise the people of Odisha in the dealing with the outbreak through information, education, and communication during the early days of the Pandemic. Prior to his work with the Government of Odisha, Subroto Bagchi spent four decades with the Indian IT industry where he is best known as a co-founder of Mindtree. Mindtree is one of India’s most admired software companies that built the AADHAR platform among its many other contributions. Today, Mindtree has a market cap in excess of USD 10 billion and employs 23000 people worldwide. Subroto Bagchi is a well-known writer with several business best-sellers. His books have been translated in most Indian languages as well as Chinese and Korean. He has served the boards of IIM Bengaluru, Indian Oil, IIIT Bhubaneswar and he currently serves the Board of Governors of the Software Technology Parks of India. Along with his writer wife, Susmita, Subroto Bagchi supports the cause for prevention of blindness, geriatric care, mental health, entrepreneurship development, school and vocational education with their personal resources and time. To make a small difference to their State in cancer care, they have set aside Rupees 340 crores to bring up an integrated, comprehensive, world-class, oncology platform in association with the Government of Odisha, Karunashraya and Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation. Of the Rupees 340 crores, Rupees 210 crores will be donated to Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation and Rupees 130 crores will be donated to Karunashraya for setting up their respective Units in Info-Valley, Bhubaneswar. The two centres will carry the Bagchi name. However, Susmita and Subroto Bagchi will not be institutionally connected, nor have any commercial interest whatsoever.
