
Harun Rashid Khan served as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 2011 to 2016. Born and educated in Bhubaneswar, he attended Badagada High School, where he excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities, particularly in English debates and elocution contests, despite studying in the vernacular medium. Khan pursued higher education at Utkal University, earning a Master’s degree in Political Science, followed by a Master of Philosophy from Jawaharlal Nehru University’s School of International Studies.
Khan began his career with the RBI in 1978, holding various significant positions throughout his tenure, including Director of Bank of Maharashtra and Punjab and Sind Bank, Executive Director of RBI, and Director of NABARD. He also served as the Principal of RBI’s College of Agricultural Banking in Pune and was appointed Regional Director of RBI, New Delhi, before becoming Deputy Governor in July 2011. Khan chaired the RBI Internal Group on Rural Credit and Microfinance, known as the Khan Committee, which played a crucial role in expanding financial inclusion in India through the Business Facilitator and Business Correspondent models.
He also chaired the Working Group on the Development of the Corporate Bond Market in India, contributing significantly to its growth. Throughout his career, Khan authored various papers on financial strategies, IT governance, and central banking challenges.
